White reflected on his decade-long run on the show toVarietyin 2022 as he admitted that he “wasn’t sure shows are meant to go that long.”

“There was a period where I stopped feeling like an actor and I started feeling like I was just here to do this show,” he said.

Still, he said, “I loveShamelessso much. I love everybody that was a part of it, and the experience was incredible.”

Theshow’s conclusioncame three years afterone of the original cast members, Emmy Rossum, departed. Rossum, who played scrappy Fiona and was responsible for keeping the Gallagher family together, announced her exit on Facebook, writing at the time that it was a “hard thing to put into words.”

“The opportunity to play Fiona has been a gift. There are few characters — female or otherwise — as layered and dynamic,” she wrote of her character before confirming her exit.

“I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block."
