The award, originally known as the Video Vanguard Award, was first established in 1984 and honors artists and directors for their achievements in music. It was renamed in 1991 in honor ofMichael Jackson, who received the award in 1988.
Over the years, the award has been given to several big names in music, including Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Pink.
