There ’s a big bloodless hulk swim off the sea-coast of Seattle , and no one know why .
Over the past workweek , people in the greater Seattle sphere have spotted the white whale swimming around Puget Sound . The wayward cetacean — abeluga — is normally found in Arctic and subarctic waters .

" The closest beluga population is Cook Inlet , Alaska , " which is about 1,500 miles ( 2,400 km ) aside from Seattle , Howard Garrett , co - founder of Orca web , a nonprofit organization that levy awareness about whales in Puget Sound , assure Live Science . One of the first report sightings occurred on Sunday ( Oct. 3 ) , when Jason Rogers , of Bonney Lake , Washington , filmed the white hulk swim in Commencement Bay near Tacoma , about 30 sea mile ( 50 km ) south of Seattle .
" It was a surrealistic experience , to be certain , " Rogers tell Live Science in an email . " sail in Commencement Bay was the last station we thought we would see a whale , much less a white whale ! There it was , swimming along peacefully , although it really feel out of place . "
Other people spotted the beluga ( Delphinapterus leucas ) around Puget Sound , even swim by three different shipyards . That beluga , nickname Hvaldimir , is still swim in Norse waters ; brute welfare militant are worried it may not be able to run by itself and avert man , according to the BBC .
There are n’t any clues hinting at the newfound beluga ’s extraction . " We ’ve see no markings , no indication of where it comes from , " Garrett say .
Like many otherArcticand subarctic fauna , beluga adults are white , which helps them persist camouflaged in a mankind of C and ocean ice , according to the Georgia Aquarium . Belugas are also known for their unique " melons , " the round bumps on their head that the whales use for communication and echolocation . In fact , belugas are social animals that live in pods of as many as 100 individuals , Garrett said , which get this lone giant ’s journey all the more mysterious .
So , why did this whale venture out on its own ?
" Until we have some indication , my default possibility is that this whale just decide to go out walk , go explore , " Garrett enjoin . " It wanted to journey . It ’s extremely strange , but every now and then it happens with different [ beluga ] populations . So , it ’s not totally unprecedented , but definitely very rare . "
The last document sighting of a beluga whale in Puget Sound was in 1940 , Garrett aver . There was also a report of a beluga in Puget Sound in 2010 , but only one person reported experience it , and they were n’t able-bodied to get any photographic evidence of it , he noted .

In 2020 , a beluga hulk wash up dead in Baja California Sur , Mexico , according to The Mercury News . It ’s still a mystery why that hulk swam to such warm urine . " I do n’t know why a white whale would do that , " Garrett said .

That suppose , the Puget Sound beluga appear to be in good wellness , at least according to sightings of it so far . Belugas run through calamari , small fish and crabby person , " and there ’s plenty of that in Puget Sound , " he suppose . Puget Sound is also home to other whales , including transient and residentorcasand transmigrate gray whales , humpback whalesand minke heavyweight , Garret said .
Local hulk and other animal group are aware of the wayward beluga , include the local subdivision of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ) , which hopes to safely approach the hulk to get images of it . Such image could be compared with pic of other known beluga whales , and might help scientists discover where the Puget Sound visitant came from , Garrett said .
