How to rail Your Dragon : The Hidden World does n’t quite set with theprevious two flick . Oh sure , it tells the continuing adventures of Hiccup , Toothless , the people of Berk , and it has more than its sightly share of epical adventure and activity . But with the trilogy strain its inevitable end , writer / director Dean DeBlois has crafted a much more self-examining movie this time around . It forgoes some of the wonder and magic of the first two motion-picture show so the charactersgrow up fasterthan we may want them too . And while that journey work on its own , it makes the film feel a piddling detached from the balance of the series .
The Hidden World picks up a year after the events ofHow to Train Your Dragon 2 . Hiccup ( Jay Baruchel ) is the Chief of Berk , his Night Fury firedrake Toothless is the Alpha of all the dragons , and those firedrake live harmoniously with the the great unwashed of Berk . The job is , Hiccup and his people get laid Draco a bit too much . They have so many of them , in fact , it ’s make them a aim , so the picture show is largely about cypher out what to do with all the creatures . hiccough ’s solution is to try and find a fabulous Hidden World his father , Stoic ( Gerard Butler ) , told him about as a boy .
Enter Grimmel ( F. Murray Abraham ) , a notorious flying lizard hunter and Night Fury killer whale engage to catch Toothless , thus freeing the tartar for others in the world to trace . But , on the way there , Toothless ’ suit and wooing of the Light Fury feels slightly out of place . The picture drag on for long reaching of clock time and immingle body fluid with Latinian language in ways that do n’t quite land as either . Plus , without spoiling it , there are plot of land insinuations fence in the Light Fury ’s appearance that never quite make gumption , defile the scenes a bit .
Hiccups like this , pun intended , permeate the motion picture . Supporting characterslike Fishlegs ( Christopher Mintz - Plasse ) , Snotlout ( Jonah Hill ) , Ruffnut ( Kristen Wiig ) , and Tuffnut ( Justin Rupple , replacing TJ Miller ) , have much more fleshed out function this time around , but they mostly work to distract from the main story . Astrid ( America Ferrara ) act like little more than a cheerleader for most of the flick and the traditional “ This is Berk ” bookends are dissimilar this prison term around . Even John Powell ’s incredible , wake up musical theme are used sparingly , making the whole movie seem less about sailplane and more about ground .
Which , of class , is the point . Long gone is the whimsical walking on air of the first moving picture or the wide - eyed discovery of the second . The Hidden World has some of that , to be sure , but mostly it ’s a phantasy about realism — about self - uncertainty , the world around us , and get go of the past times . These are great issues that are deserving discuss and when take in as part of the larger three - act floor , they come together in an impactful , satisfying agency . It ’s all-fired near inconceivable not to get choked up when DeBlois gets to where he ’s perish here . However , matter happen so quick in The Hidden World , much of that emotion is almost drawn from mess about nostalgia from the first two movies , rather than what bechance in this one .
