Disney is a magnificently close troupe . It’sso tightlipped , in fact , that some of its big mysteries have elevated into caption . Have you see there ’s a basketball game court inside the Matterhorn drive ? Are there really full city underneath the root parks? In the Disney+ showThe Imagineering Story , many of those fable will in conclusion be break and we have filmmaker Leslie Iwerks to give thanks .
Iwerks is the master force-out behind the Modern six - episode series , which debut when Disney+ launch Tuesday . The show tag the history of Disney musical theme parks and technical introduction through their creators , predict Imagineers , start from their humble beginningsall the style up through today . Along the way , Disney fans will get to see things they never dreamed of . For case , yes , there are cities under the parks and yes there is a basketball court in the Matterhorn .
“ When [ Disney+ ] saw [ an former cut of the show ] they state , ‘ If you could do anything more , what would you want to do to stop this plastic film up ? It ’s really honorable as it is . but what else can we do ? ’ ” Iwerks told io9 on the headphone last calendar week . “ I enounce ‘ Well , ideally , I ’d love to … take the looker into area that no one ’s ever been … The idea [ of ] all this mythology around a basketball court in the Matterhorn , is it true ? Is it not ? Those kinds of things . ’ I thought , ‘ Well , if we ’re ever start to show the public what is behind the scenery , now is our opportunity . ’ ”

While awe-inspiring moments like that bump all across ( at least the first two episode of ) The Imagineering Story , they are n’t the main focus . The focus was to document and yield tribute to the Imagineers , people Walt Disney employ to make his dream add up true . Iwerks was to travel “ around the human race , go to all the parks or resorts and go behind the scenes and interview mass and papers what [ Disney ] considered a raw golden long time in Imagineering over the last say , six years , with Shanghai openingandall these new lands that they werebuilding , et cetera . So that ’s what we did in that . And it ’s jolly nerveless . ”
Disney rent Iwerks to do that almost seven twelvemonth ago , and at the clip , she had no idea where the film would experience . Still , she set out to work , filming 250 consultation as well as between 300 - 400 hours of barn - roll along the way , some of which was so secretive ( like early look atPandoraandStar Wars : Galaxy ’s Edge ) , she was n’t certain if she ’d even be able to use it , depending on when her cinema was free .

Now , if you ’re cogitate , this is all a little too good to be true — you’re right . Iwerks is belike one of a few people on Earth the Walt Disney Company would confide with this form of access , and it ’s because it ’s in her blood . Her grandpa was Ub Iwerks , Walt Disney ’s first business better half and co - creator and energiser of Mickey Mouse , so she know much of what ’s in the plastic film first hand . Iwerks ’ first film was about her granddad , called The Hand Behind the Mouse : The Ub Iwerks Story , and she ’s since made docudrama on Pixar and Industrial Light and Magic , among others .
“ I suppose give my background with the company….and the trustfulness they had with me , it matte up like they could swear me and I could keep their mystery entire , which I did for , you know , seven eld , ” Iwerks order . “ And I know a number of these citizenry as well through their family … So I never felt like they were holding anything back or saying , ‘ No , you ca n’t see that ’ or , ‘ We do n’t want to talk about that . ’ ”

Armed with that access , thing easy lead off to take shape . Once the film became a Disney+ project , Iwerks was forced to block working on it for all of 2018 while the logistics for the unexampled streaming service were knead out . Then , in January of 2019 , she dispatch the footing running again , film new scenes ( like the hoops court ) and more leading up to this week ’s debut .
Episode one of the show follow Walt Disney ’s approximation to ramp up a subject park name Disneyland and premise the people he tasked with creating it . sequence two focuses on that vision expand to Florida in what would become Walt Disney World . Future sequence will showGalaxy ’s Edge , Pandora , and more . However , Iwerks knew she had to keep it sharpen on the people .
“ There are so many other storylines that we could have included , ” Iwerks say . “ Like a rich dive into hotels andinnovation in hotelsand whatnot … It was just a bountiful of cloth [ and ] we just had to keep full-strength to the common and the invention in the study within that sphere . So you ’ve get animatronics , you ’ve catch floor , you got queues , you got engineering , you ’ve got ride system . All those thing had to be built into the storyline as to how they evolved from the first park in the 1950s . Really the train of thought has become Walt built the happiest place on earth . But creating felicity is arduous work . That almost became our mantra . ”

And , in a nerveless twist , not only does The Imagineering Story text file the most 70 - class - old story of Disneyland and the society ’s other parks , but Iwerks was able to literally film the construction of Shanghai Disneyland from the priming up too .
“ I took like six trips just to witness the building of a commons from the dirt up , ” she said . “ To think about what Walt did when he was in the dirt and now Shanghai and dirt and the symbolism of a clean pageboy and coming out with just ‘ What is a theme park ? What is it go to be ? ’ Those are all really coolheaded , inspiring level that I remember will hopefully enlighten and urge on people to say , ‘ Wow , if they can do that , I can do this . ’ ”
However , though Disney was receptive to revealing arcanum along the path , there were some things Iwerks could n’t do .

Building the animatronic birds for the Enchanted Tiki Room.
“ I mean , there are certain forbidden blot out things , ” she say . “ We could n’t go backstage [ at the stem parks ] . [ Places ] where the magic [ is made ] . You just ca n’t do it , you know ? ” In other words , Disney does n’t need exposure of the doer playing Mickey Mouse with his head off to get out . The film explains the charge Disney puts into stay fresh up all those legerdemain , for children especially .
And yet , there ’s so much good stuff in the documentary , you belike wo n’t heed . In addition to those 250 interviews and hundreds of hours of B - roll , The Imagineering Story is filled with eminent definition archival footage moments all across Disney ’s account , much of which has never been seen before . For model , there ’s a scenery of a car driving throughthe Jungle Cruise rideat Disneyland that simply bodge my mind .
“ There are reels of film , 100 of reels of film that have n’t been really ensure before at the studio archive , ” Iwerks say . “ The film archive of the studio had volume of ligature of material with just words on them , like ‘ Epcot fashioning - Of ’ or something like that . ”

Iwerks and her squad went through all that footage and took peculiar care to go find archive footage of the the great unwashed she was interview in guild to give a rouge a more complete picture of them .
“ I wanted everybody to sense like their own role , ” Iwerks said . “ Everyone that we were able to question , of course , we ’re gon na go [ get ] all the footage of them going back as far as we can . The idea of that was just to really three dimensionalize everybody and make you really see them as a personality rather than just a talking head . ”
“ It ’s tough when you ’ve got so many characters , ” she continued . “ This is the story of a department or an governing body , but within it are all these mass . So we had to kind of soma out who ’s sound to get a little chip more screen time and who ’s going to get a little less . But a lot of it was based on how much footage we come up of them , as far as the erstwhile generation . And then you had the newer generation who could verbalise to me about the sometime generation so eloquently . So they would come in and patronage that as well . So , yeah , it was pretty fun . It ’s like a enceinte puzzle . ”

And just like every puzzle , eventually , it all follow together . So after being commission — then shooting , redaction , and screening a rough six - time of day cut ; find a home on Disney+ ; gain extra funding for more consultation ; and then the finishing touches , The Imagineering Storywill launching this week . Two episode will derive in week one with the others on subsequent weeks . And , of course , what you see on screen is n’t everything .
“ I do n’t want to give away the rest of the sequence but yeah , we did go behind the setting of certain attracter and , you know , see mass work out on clobber , ” Iwerks said . “ We got into the [ refurbishment of the ] Matterhorn . Some stuff got cut , actually . So if we ever do any further scenes or sequence , we ’ll be able to incorporate some of the clobber that did n’t make six hours … There are just so many thing that you go ‘ God , this show could go on eternally . ’ ”
And , intrust us , if you ’re a Disney fan , you ’ll require it to go on eternally too .

The Imagineering Story will swarm on Disney+ .
