This is Palomar 2 , one of 15 globular ace bunch originally discover by Hubble — not the blank space telescope , but its fabled namesake , as Edwin Hubble was part of the project that first hear these clusters back in the 1950s .
This cluster was identified during the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey , hence the name Palomar 2 . Its find is unusual mostly because it chance so late ; most clusters were discovered long before the 1950s . After all , star bunch are giant collections of one thousand or , in the font of globular clusters , zillion of the brightest physical object in the sky . As such , it take an unusual combination of broker for a globular cluster like Palomar 2 to dodge sensing even after centuries of telescopic notice .
accord to NASA , Palomar 2 and the other 14 hidden cluster come across by Hubble and his colleagues must either be very far aside , situated behind thick clouds of debris , or have recede most of their stars , result in their current dim appearance . This image — which , yes , was take by Hubble the telescope , rather than Hubble the astronomer — is the full horizon yet of the clustering . Here ’s some more info from the NASA and ESA scientist behind the find :

This particular cluster is unique in more than one way of life . For one , it is the only globular cluster that we see in this part of the sky , the northerly constellation of Auriga ( The Charioteer ) . Globular clusters orbit the center of a galaxy like the milklike Way in the same way that planet circulate around the ground . This means that they normally rest closer in to the astronomical center than we do , and so we almost always see them in the same neighborhood of the sky . Palomar 2 is an exception to this , as it is around five time further away from the middle of the Milky Way than other bunch . It also lies in the diametric direction — further out than Earth — and so it is classify as an “ outer gloriole ” globular . It is also unusual due to its apparent dimness . The clump is obliterate by a masque of dust , dampening the apparent brightness of the stars within it and reach it come along as a very light-headed burst of stars .
