Flip ’s followup to the successful , caveman - soft Mino HDis essentially the same intersection , slightly better . The advance are welcome , but there are still some outcome I like Flip would cover .

The original Mino HDwas one of the round-eyed , easy - to - use pocket cams out there . Its television quality was nothing to write home about ( and blench in comparison to , say , theKodak Zi8 ) , but it sell carload base on its near looks and respectable performance . So what does the new Mino HD bring to the table ?

What’s New
The new Mino HD unquestionably feel better in the hand than its predecessor . It ’s only marginally smaller ( about 1.5 millimeter thinner , same width and height ) but the rising slope to aluminum from glossy charge plate take it feel much more hearty and expensive . The other melioration are welcome as well — the new screen is both orotund ( 2 inches liken to 1.5 ) and importantly sharper , and it ’s now packing 8 GB of internal memory , double that of the first Mino HD . That 8 GB of memory allows for about two hours of 720p transcription . Also new is an HDMI - out jack for share video on HD cover , and it also gasconade a firm C.P.U. ( I did n’t see a difference in performance , but Flip says battery living is improved ) .
What’s Unchanged, but Shouldn’t Be
As it ’s packing the same sensor as the first Mino HD , this new variant shares the same persuasiveness and suffers from the same flaws : unspoiled in solid lighting and snug - ups , but noisy in humbled - light and choppy while pan . It still ca n’t take still , there ’s no optical zoom , and there ’s no image stabilizer . Also unchanged are those deuced touch - sensitive buttons . I accidentally hit the “ Play ” feeling - button several time because you do n’t have to depress an actual , tactile push to make command , which is extremely annoying . Tactile push button would be a wad more accurate and result in less accidental pressure .

As always , we should name that the days of dedicated pocket cams like the Mino HD are numbered . They ’re fence in on all side , with the iPod Nano hitting them from the low - destruction and smartphones hit them from the high . Since convergence isalready killing PMPs , we do n’t see this sort of gadget lasting all that much longer . That being said …

The Flip Mino HD is a solid selection for a pocket cam , since it ’s sort of the distillation of what the sac cam class aims for : It ’s dead simple , to a fault sometimes , takes comme il faut but not amazing video , and is sleek and pocketable . We ’d really have care to see some melioration to the Mino HD ’s sensor ( as well as the merciless execution of those feeling - buttons ) , but overall it ’s still a reasonably decorous cam . This fresh version sells for $ 230 , while the old 4 GB model drops to $ 200 — and we ’d say the improvements are worth the additional $ 30 if you ’re tear between the two . The Flip Mino HDis uncommitted now .
