If you ’re still mourning the going of Joss Whedon ’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer , BBC Americahopes to ease your botheration . Their fresh teen - fight - the - Hell serial publication , Demons , premieres this Saturday in the States . We bewilder a sneak peak .
The assumption behind Demons , which aired in the UK on ITV earlier in the year , is much the same as Buffy — cunning adolescent finds out they have an unlearned power to battle evil while balancing schooltime , dating , and repulse test ( the latter not so well ) .
In this rendering the precious teenager is a boy , but like Buffy , Luke Rutherford , play by Christian Cooke ( a Gossip Girl clone ) has a mentor who teaches him the way of fiend slaying . Rupert Galvin , played by Philip Glenister of UK ’s Life on Mars , is a sarcastic American , often referred to as the “ colonial ” . He unfortunately is a moment of a pull on the show as he tries too hard to channel CSI : Miami ’s David Caruso — and well , no one should do that , not even Caruso himself .

Rupert , who was Luke ’s dead forefather ’s demon scrap sidekick , comes back to township to let Luke know that he ’s the real - life great - great grandson of AbrahamVan Helsing . Yes , the Van Helsing made famous as a vampire hunting watch in Bram Stoker ’s Dracula . As a Van Helsing , Luke inherits the undertaking of protect the veritable globe from the supernatural wickedness of the infernal region .
In the first episode , we get a glimpse of who these goblins are , and the unveiling is stellar . First up is Gladiolus Thrip , a sleazy bountifulness hunting watch who wears an graven beak on his nose and has a mo of a Twin Peaks melodic line to him . good part : He ’s run by Mackenzie Crook , Gareth from the UK ’s The Office . The transformation from oddball to beast is deserving watching the first episode in itself .
By the 2d episode we learn that Luke and his crew , which admit his mentor , his deadly non - girlfriend , and a live unreasoning opera house singer who has visions , are in charge of figure out every strange occurrence in Luke ’s Sunnydale — London .

output quality is decent , though some of the special upshot can be a fleck cheesy . As with most writing style idiot box production , war paint and costume effects beat out the show ’s CG . The penning is up to par with Whedon , with witty banter between characters that execute the gamut between dark ages humor to painful teen sexual tension and irony .
Is it a number too similar to Buffy ? Sure . But it ’s not a total reproduction . It ’s more like an extension of its predecessor . Or maybe an alternative , male , Buffyverse . Either means , it ’s entertaining enough that you may forgive it for rive off the basic premiss .
Demonspremieres Saturday , January 2 at 10 PM on BBC America .
