Apple was having a pretty good week . The companionship just report a record book quarter , raking in one thousand million thanks to the iPhone 11 and selling a whole heap of AirPods and Apple Watches . Just a day later , Apple and its wireless chip provider , Broadcom , were slapped with a $ 1.1 billion sagaciousness . According to Bloomberg , the fine isthe 6th largest patent of invention judgment of all sentence .

Bloomberg remark that both Broadcom and Apple have already announced programme to appeal the judgment , while the California Institute of Technology , who bring the courtship , is reportedly quite pleased with results .

Caltech originally filed wooing back in May 2016 , alleging that Broadcom and Apple both used wifi chips trust on something called unpredictable repeat and accumulate ( IRA ) encoders . These encoders ( and their complementary decoders ) basically allow for more efficient and better transmission of data over wireless signal . Caltech alleged that Broadcom used IRA encoders in their wifi silicon chip and therefore owed Caltech royalties on the patents for those encoders .
Apple is one of Broadcom ’s largest guest , and because Broadcom ’s chips seem in nearly every Apple gimmick with build up - in wireless fidelity , Caltech say Apple owe royalties , too .
The companies spent millions of dollar mark dissent with one another in court . The jury test last began January 15 in California . Broadcom continued to assert it did n’t utilise Caltech ’s IP , but then things got messy . An expert witness for Broadcom and Apple had to correct his testimony after it was submitted , and then , according to Law360,struggled to explain how the errors were initially made , weakening Broadcom and Apple ’s defense . Then Caltech ’s attorney take in closing arguments thatBroadcom and Apple had hidden a witness .
The allegation apparently held water with the jury — they ordered the companies to make up Caltech over $ 1.1 billion , with Apple prescribe to give $ 837.8 million and Broadcom enjoin to pay $ 270.2 million .
While both companies can probably afford the perspicacity , they ’ve enunciate that they will appeal .
