Either way , the peppy little player that really whips the llama ’s ass has beenfading into obscurity for long time now , and on ( probably ) the day of its final demise , allow ’s reflect . I am gon na miss the guy .

Winamp is one of the first programs I think customizing . Really digging into and play with . await back , the power to easy custom-make people of colour combinations is far from revelatory , but at the clock time ( and for me , someone who spent a lot of clock time doing poppycock like using Visual Basic to code crappy animations I ’d create skeletal frame - by - frame in MS Paint ) it felt like an unbelievable fomite for aesthetic grammatical construction . Black and Ne green ? Hell yeah ! I ’m a h4xor , d00ds .
And the visualizations . It ’s impossible to forget the visualisation .
I can clearly think , with an astonishing saturation , sit around at the family electronic computer desk listen tothe Mechwarrior 2 soundtrackwith a Winamp visualization of an 10 - Wing barreling down an dateless tunnel of black outline by throb , wispy neuron of ignitor , on its direction to the center of some impossibly monolithic Death Star , a head trip to an unreachable and unimaginably radiant power sum . I remember watching — enraptured — for what seems like it must have been hr on destruction , cognize there was nothing coming , no end , but unable to stop fantasizing .
I was a pretty weird tyke .
But beyond the pelt , beyond the visualizations , the flashing lights and llama ’s strap ass , there was the radio . Good old fashioned Shoutcast radio . A playlist curated not by an algorithm , but by some flesh - and - blood line lunatic with ostensibly discerning and eclectic tastes . Some softheaded streaming buff sitting in an bare basement , no doubt dreaming of the pirate radiocommunication station he ’d never have around to building . No , this would have to be good enough .
And so when I was sitting in my parent ’ life elbow room on New Years Eve 2004 , playing Half - sprightliness 2 : Deathmatch on the brand young e - Machines PC we ’d make for Christmas , Winamp was there too . In the background , behind the full - CRT screen glory of toilette sling from gravitational force gun , Winamp sang me a hooky “ la da da la di da da da ” that I still whistle to myself all these years later . God only recognise what anonymous Shoutcast DJ queued it up , but the song and the snap memory have stick with me ever since . Together they ’ve come through Winamp a stead in my heart .
